A Fantastic Day in SF!

It was beautiful & sunny Saturday at the 2009 Walk to Cure Diabetes at Crissy Field in San Francisco. While fog played cat and mouse with the Golden Gate Bridge throughout the day, Team Shelby was cozy in their new hoodie sweatshirts, which came off and on as the wind would fade then bluster. We had a terrific turnout and a ton of fun!
Liz, with an assist from Alex and her great-niece Annabelle, led the warm-up for the estimated 1,500 walkers there to raise money and show support for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.

We have so many stories to share and be thankful for:
  • We had family members from Covina and Lompoc who traveled up for the weekend. Scott's sister Marianne with her husband Brian and their boys Aaron & Nathan joined us for the first time in a couple of years. Our house feels just a little too quiet now that Liz's niece Amanda, 'adopted' niece Natasha, and Annabelle, Gabby and Alexandra have returned home.
  • Our baseball buddy continued his fabulous support for Team Shelby. We met Mark Faver and his buddy Ricco at the Giants game three years ago, and they've been fantastic Team Shelby supporters ever since. Ricco couldn't make the Walk this year, but Mark brought his wife Nancy and daughter Amanda along with him from Elk Grove, near Sacramento.
  • Our terrific American Canyon crew turned out in force. All our Jazzercise friends and there families have been a consistent and tremendous support to Team Shelby and our family, many from the very first day Shelby was diagnosed 8 years ago. Though there are too many to list without surely leaving someone out, we couldn't do what we do with each of you.
Our hearts and prayers also go out to the huge number of Team Shelby members who were sidelined this year with medical issues and the flu. We hope you all recover quickly, and plan on joining us in October 2010 when we go back to Crissy Field.

This was our first year at the San Francisco Walk, after our favorite Napa walk was moved over to Santa Rosa. The setting couldn't be more beautiful. Crissy Field is located right on the shore of San Francisco Bay with views of the Golden Gate Bridge to the west, Alcatraz to the east and the San Francisco skyline to the south. The walk was a flat 2-mile loop around the meadow and pond. Aside from competing with the bicyclists and joggers it was a great stroll. There also was a 4-mile hike through parts of the Presidio, which Patti & Mike Schnieders and Gina Osborn of Team Shelby went on and said had terrific views! Plus, there was Walktober Fest over at Sports Basement sponsored by Gordon Biersch.

We want to thank everyone for their unbelievable support this year! You guys were a terrific support through Liz's Labor Day surgery, and helped with all the last-minute Team Shelby organizing and, of course, walk day.

Enjoy the photos to re-live the day, or experience it vicariously. We can't wait to see you all in 2010!
